and find healing through creative expression
The Warriors’ Journey Home Writing Circle...a veterans’ writing group in which we listen, speak and heal...will resume Wednesday, January 25 at 7:00 PM in the first floor conference room (enter through the right side front door), United Church of Christ, 1400 East Main Street, Kent. We will meet weekly on Wednesdays, now in our 8th year.
The intention: to offer veterans and those whose lives have been touched by war a supportive ground, a communal gathering place, where they may tell their stories, write their stories and poems and be heard with respect and understanding. LISTEN. SPEAK. HEAL. This is the guiding idea of Warriors’ Journey Home which began to meet in September, 2006, at the First Congregational Church in Tallmadge under the leadership and generous spirit of the Reverend John Schluep, a veteran, friend and counselor to those who have served in the military. In the fall of 2009, a veterans’ writing group grew out of that healing circle, sponsored by the Wick Poetry Center and organized by Maj Ragain, a KSU faculty member and poet. Some extraordinary and restorative writing came of that first group... That work continues. Let’s sit down together and hash it out in stories and sometimes poems. The writer finds an attentive and supportive audience at our table. The talk generated often leads to more writing.
Civilians are welcome and needed. Part of the intention is to extend the veterans’ experiences to the civilian audience so that noncombatants might understand and share the moral burden. This is an open gathering. You need not be a writer. Perhaps this is the place you begin. Members of previous years’ Circles will join us to continue the search for words to bring the experience to the page and build a bridge to the reader.
Much has been written about war over the generations. We will be drawing upon those poems and stories for models, how to get it said, how to bring one’s own truth to the page. Each of us has stories that shape our lives. Each life is a story. We get what we do. Join us Wednesday, January 25, at 7:00 till 9:00 pm at United Church of Christ in Kent. For further information, contact Maj Ragain at 330-678-7473 or at email@example.com. Or Rev. Dr .John Schluep at 330-633-4931 or at firstname.lastname@example.org. This ongoing work is sponsored by the Wick Poetry Center and Warriors’ Journey Home, in alliance with the KSU Veterans Club.
“The thing about a story is that you dream it as you tell it, hoping that others might then dream along with you, and in this way memory and imagination and language combine to make spirits in the head.” Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried.
